Writing the Oil Record Book, Part 1 (Machinery Space Operations)
Oil record book is required for all tankers above 150 grt and all other ships above 400grt.
Operations required to be mentioned
1.Ballasting or cleaning of oil tanks
2.Collection and disposal of oil residues
3.Discharge overboard or disposal of bilge water from Engine room
4. Bunkering of fuels or bulk lubricating oil(in any tanks)
Apart from the above, any accidental discharges of oil or oily mixtures must be entered with circumstances
or reasons for discharge. Any failures of oil discharge equipment must also be made
ORB should be kept in an accessible location and to be preserved for three years from the last entry made
LIST OF ITEMS TO BE RECORDED WITH CODES
(A) Ballasting or cleaning of fuel tanks
1. Identity of the tank
2.Whether cleaned the tank before, if not type of oil previously contained
3. For Cleaning process
3.1 Position and time of ship at the start and completion of operation.
3.2 identify the tanks in which on or other method is employed( Rinsing through, steaming, cleaning
with chemicals; type and quantity of chemicals in m3)
3.3 Name of the tanks to which the cleaning water is transferred.
4. For Ballasting operation
4.1 Position and time of ship at the start and completion of operation.
4.2 Quantity of Ballast if tanks are not cleaned.
(B) Discharge of ballast or cleaning water from fuel tanks already referred under section (A)
5. Identity of tanks
6. Position of ship at the start of discharge
7. Position of ship at the end of discharge
8. Ship's speed during discharge
9. Method of discharge
9.1 Through 15 ppm equipment
9.2 to reception facility
10. Quantity discharged
(C) Collection,Transfer and Disposal of oil residues(Sludge)
11. Weekly declaration( done on Saturday)
11.1 Tank identity
11.2 Capacity of tank
11.3 Quantity retained
11.4 quantity collected by manual operation(like cleaning of machinery sump)
12. Transfer or disposal of sludge
12.1 to reception facility with port name
12.2 to another tank(identify name and quantity retained)
12.3 incinerated( total time of operation with start and stop time)

(D) Non automatic Discharge overboard, transfer or disposal of Bilge Water.
